BAN BAKKEN OIL TRAINS along the East-West Corridor in New York State
Between two and three oil trains, each carrying about a million gallons of oil in 50-100 rail cars, travel through Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse, Utica, and Albany daily.
Bakken crude oil is more flammable than other oils because it has a higher gas content and vapor pressure.
Derailments and explosions cause death, injury, water and soil contamination, and destruction of neighborhoods: Lac Megantic, Quebec, July 2013; Aliceville AL, Nov. 2013; Casselton ND, Dec. 2013; Mt. Carbon WV, Feb. 2015; Lynchburg VA, April 2016; Mosier Oregon, June 2016. The Fed. Dept. of Transportation predicts 10 derailments per year.
In New York State, the trains threaten to contaminate Lake Erie and Lake Ontario—drinking water supplies for about 20 million people in NYS and Canada—plus the Erie Canal, Genesee River, Onandaga Lake, Mohawk River and other rivers, streams, and tributaries.
While many individuals, businesses, and politicians are calling for improved safety regulations and emergency response capability, such measures are too little, too late.
Climate change demands that we stop the extraction, processing, transportation, and burning of fossil fuels, including the Bakken oil.
THEREFORE, We the undersigned NY residents, call upon our NYS Senators Chuck Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand, as well as House Representatives Collins, Higgins, Hanna, Katko, Reed, and Slaughter, to impose an immediate federal legislatively imposed ban on the Bakken Oil Trains in the east-west corridor of New York State, and to hold Congressional hearings to examine the current realities of transporting dangerous Bakken crude oil through our communities. The
Mothers Out Front Letter to Congress, Fall 2016, signed by elected officials, municipal bodies, businesses, and faith and civic groups, provides a more information and a more detailed rationale for banning the Bakken trains in the east-west corridor of New York State.
